Joel Acosta Ms. Sheehan English IV 6 October 2015 Child Obesity Annexing America Approximately 17 percent of children and teenagers ages two through nineteen were obese from 2011 to 2012, which is approximately 53 million people, and 31.8 percent or 99 million were either overweight or obese (Ogden CL, et. al). Some might think that these percentages are nothing, but to combat these statistics it is important to have a healthy diet. If the healthy diet is maintained and exercising is implemented there is a lower risk of having these negative effects such as heart disease, joint damage, diabetes and much more. This has a very negative effect on the human body. The extra weight from being obese causes stress on the body s joints and has higher risks of loosening and causing further damage to the joints (â€Å"Obesity† st anfordhealthcare.org). This can also seriously impact the growth of the child because â€Å"too much weight places excess stress on the growth plates that are on your bones which can lead to early arthritis, and a greater risk for broken bones† (â€Å"The Impact of Childhood Obesity†). All of these conditions will be very painful to watch a child go through at such a young age. Now some people might think that high blood pressure only affects old people. But nowadays it affects older people as much as it does to children. As I stated before â€Å"high blood pressure increases the heart rate which then reduces the ability to transport blood to the heart†(â€Å"Obesity†). High blood pressure can cause serious long term health effects one being kidney disease which â€Å"cleanses your blood by removing waste and excess fluid, maintains the balance of salt and minerals in your blood which helps regulate blood pressure† (â€Å"Kidney Diseases Causes and Basic Information†). When the kidneys are the damaged there can be build in them of toxic fluids and if both get damage it can be a fatal condition since there will be no other organ to cleanse the body. It’s very clever of Adichie to include Richard and the development of his book to her novel because she can inform the reader about the Biafran war in an unusual and unique manner. Adichie on the other hand wrote this novel in 2006 while the Biafran war took place from 1967 to 1970. She was also born in 1977 in an entirely different generation from the one she writes about. It seems very difficult to try to capture such detailed scenes in the book without having the proper experience to go along with it (Hawley 18). On the other hand Richard lived the war and was front and center to all of the malnutrition and awful things that were happening to the Nigerian people. Adichie’s significance of Richards’s book I think is to make her novel an informative one. It makes the reader feel special; I want to become a writer one day so having read this novel has given me an idea of how I might have the same issues with starting to write a book. After so much about the book Richard gives up and decides that the title is too powerful for him to put his name on it. The war was silent when we died has to be from a person who has lived in Nigeria and is culturally been Nigerian. Although Richard was a white man living in a Black man’s world he made a very clear and outstanding book. After reflecting on it he noticed it just wasn’t meant to be then Ugwu decided to take over and announced it as his own. Ugwu is the best person to put his name on that book he is a true Nigerian man who also experienced the war and much more. At the end I agreed with his dedication to his master. If it wasn’t for Odenigbo Ugwu wouldn’t be the educated and skilled person who he turned out to be.
